Hi there.
This is your November 2007 Update from Memletics.com. In this email you'll
find:
- Your current membership, subscription and order summary.
- A write-up of my experiences using a timer device to assist behavior
change.
- The winning entry for the Success Stories competition for October,
and details about our "Success Stories" competition for November.
- My thoughts on a new section in the Manual on Self Discipline.
- Early results from the "Future of Memletics - 2007" Survey and
details on how you can participate.

Member's Area
- Overviews of some of our products, services and offers that may be
of interest to you.
I had an interesting time writing up my experiences using timer devices to
assist behavior change, such as Motivaider and Invisible Clock. On emailing
these companies, I immediately received instructions on how Memletics.com
Members can get discounts on these products. See my write-up further below. I'll
be looking for similar opportunities to provide Memletics.com Members with
discounts on related products and services. Note however I intend to keep my
writing unbiased and won't be accepting commissions from these recommendations.
Some of you may have had trouble reading this Update Email in the past. We've now
greatly improved the text formatting in this combined text/HTML email, and we've
added an option to receive this email in text format only. If you are still
having problems with this email format and you'd like to receive plain text
only, click
or see your membership information just below. You can also read this
email online (however you won't see
your profile specific information).
As always, if you have suggestions on what else you'd like to see in this
email, or any other Memletics products or services, please do
contact us
or complete this
anonymous survey. We're using a new mail sending system starting
from October 2007, so if you see any problems please let us know. We really
do appreciate feedback!

Behavior change using Motivaider & similar timers
I want to share my recent experiences using an innovative timer to aid
physical behavior change. There are two devices I’ve seen so far. Both are
designed specifically to assist with behavior and attitude change.
- Motivaider – http://www.habitchange.com/ - $59.50 + S&H
- Invisible Clock - http://www.invisibleclock.com/ - $39.95 inc US S&H
Here is a pic of the Motivaider device (from their website, with permission):

And the Invisible Clock device (my own pic):

These devices work in a similar way. You wear them somewhere on your body and
set the timer to vibrate or beep at predefined intervals. The alerts trigger you
to do or think something at that time.
I chose the Invisible Clock, primarily because I prefer more customization
options and it looked smaller. To me the interface seemed slightly more complex
– primarily because it is more customizable. The simplicity of the Motivaider
device I imagine would also appeal to many.
My initial behavior change goal was probably a challenging one to start with.
It was to improve my posture while working in front of the computer as well as
general sitting and standing posture. I set the timer to vibrate every 6
minutes. Using the ‘custom timer’ option it would vibrate for 5 seconds then
automatically reset itself back to 6 minutes.
An interesting observation was seeing (or feeling) how quickly the body
adapts to external stimulus. At first the vibration was very noticeable (wearing
it at the side on my belt), however as I got more involved in my work I found I
started to ignore it. Moving the timer around, for example from the right to the
left side, and using the beeper option occasionally, helped make sure I notice
more alerts. One of the ‘hardest to ignore’ places was in my sock. This kept the
timer against my skin and close to bone – which seems to make it more noticeable
as well.
So far I’ve found the timer to be very effective – impressive given years of
poor posture. I am sitting far better in front of the computer now, and I am
walking much more upright, even without the timer now. I am not 100% yet, but I
am spending more time without the timer.
To get an idea of “correct” posture though, I needed another piece of
technology. Early on I set up a webcam on a tripod facing towards me from the
side while sitting in front of the computer. I then displayed the webcam image
in the top corner of my computer screen. I never realized how bad my posture was
until the first moment I saw the webcam images! After that, each time the timer
alerted me I looked at the webcam to check my posture. If you use a computer
often, this might be a worthwhile exercise for you.
The Motivaider website has an excellent guide (PDF) for using the Motivaider
device, however much of the content can be applied to the Invisible Clock timer
as well. Some of the uses it lists include:
- Reducing stress and increasing relaxation
- Controlling habits
- Improving athletic performance
- Improving job performance
- Improving interpersonal skills
- Getting things done
More uses are listed on the Invisible Clock website.
Combine these devices with assertions using association and you have a
powerful technique for behavior and attitude change.
What are your thoughts? Have you used these or similar devices? Should I
include this in a future update of the Memletics Manual? If you are a
Memletics.com Member,
share your thoughts on this post.
Special discount for Memletics.com Members
Update: I emailed the organizations that sell these devices to see if they
would be willing to provide readers with a discount. Good news - you can get $10
off the Motivaider device and $5 off the Invisible Clock for being a
Memletics.com Member. See the Member's Area posting for details.
By the way - I am not associated or affiliated with either company and make
no commission etc if you decide to try either device.
Concept Mapping Course - Success Story
Kelli Womack, an instructor from Georgia (USA) recently posted this story in
the Memletics.com Member's Area:

Kelli Womack |
I wanted to share my recent experience with Mapping and a class of
adult learners. I purchased the [Concept Mapping] book approximately a week
prior to the course, so I didn't have a great amount of time to test the
program.
I introduced the concept to the class on the first day as a way to
take notes. We revisited it again on the third day. I did see the students
using the mapping concepts throughout the course.
When I reviewed the stats on the course and the students, I was
pleasantly surprised that there was an increase in the scores of the final
exam. I compared the experience level, the age, and the education level and
found that there was a 12.7% increase in the test scores as compared to
previous students with the same demographics.
While I had only a small test group, I will continue to track the
progress of these students. This is exciting!!

Self Discipline and Learning
One of my potential new projects for the coming year is to add new section to
the Memletics Manual on self discipline. I feel that many problems we face today
come down to a lack of self discipline or self control. For example -
- Debt problems often arise from an inability to control our desire for
'having' objects.
- Weight problems often arise from an inability to control what we eat, or
to exercise regularly.
- Learning problems often arise from an inability to commit to regular,
frequent study periods.
Our current society seems to encourage us to abandon self-discipline, and it's
getting worse. "You can have it all now" is the motto. Forget the consequences.
The problem is that the consequences eventually catch up to us.
Self discipline was regarded by the ancient Greeks as one of the highest
virtues, if not the highest. Plato's Republic, the Old and New Testament,
Buddhist and Confucian writings, and classic and modern psychology all
contemplate and attempt to provide guidance on the topic.
With the rise of self-guided learning through CBT and distance learning, self
discipline is a fundamental skill (trait?) for successful outcomes.
What do you think?
- What are the best references for self-discipline? From Greek to current
times?
- Can someone improve their self discipline, or is it ingrained? What
about the
marshmallow test?
- What success (or problems) have you had improving self discipline?

Last month we announced the
The Future of Memletics - 2007 Survey. We've got many responses
however we are keeping the survey open for another month. We're also
aware that some people received a "survey closed" message and this has
been rectified.
Early Results
Here are some early results from the survey:
- Most people want more information on Accelerated Learning and study
skills (no surprise).
- In the self-improvement section, high scoring topics were Personal
Productivity, Critical Thinking and Creativity.
- Teaching skills (instructing others), Innovation and Leadership were
high scoring topics.
- First Aid was a high-scoring general topic!
