From Sean Whiteley and www.memletics.com

Hi%%%FIRSTNAME%%%! Here's the February 2004 Newsletter from Memletics.com. In this newsletter I let you know what’s been happening at Memletics.com since the last newsletter, and update you on what's happening now and in the future. In particular, I:

  • Provide some statistics on Memletics usage from our new statistics page.
  • Announce the 2004 Memletics User's survey.
  • Announce the new Memletics Partner Certification program.
  • Announce the new Memletics FlashUpdate service for teachers and instructors.
  • Give you a sneak preview of some options for our new graphic identity.
  • Discuss progress at our two free services launched in December.
  • Provide some links to recent research articles on goal setting.
  • List some testimonials from our new learning styles inventory.
  • Provide some tips using caffeine from the Memletics Manual.

Before starting though, Kristen and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to Memletics during 2003. Whether you are a reader of the manual, have completed the learning styles test, have helped us with developing new services, or have simply browsed our sites, you have all helped Memletics help more people learn faster. We are looking forward to a new year of helping you and others achieve your learning goals sooner!

Announcing the 2004 Memletics User's survey - win prizes!

Shortly we'll be distributing a link to the 2004 Memletics User's survey to all registered readers of the Memletics Manual and learning-styles-online.com. This will be open until the end of February and it gives you the opportunity to guide our activities for 2004.

You can do the survey anonymously, however if you provide your email address you'll go in the draw to win a US$100 Amazon.com gift voucher, or one of six copies of the book "Brain Storm" - list price US$14.99.

Some key points:

  • You'll be able to provide input and feedback on the current version of the Memletics Manual and website, and/or our learning styles website.

  • You'll be able to vote on what initiatives you'd like us to focus on over the next year.

  • You'll be able to select a new visual identity for Memletics! Vote on 4 new graphical identities, including logos, book covers and website layout concepts (see article below).

If you are not yet a reader of the Memletics Accelerated Learning Manual, you can still get the manual before the end of February and then complete the survey! Memletics Manual Readers will soon receive a link to the survey.

We're currently finalizing implementation details, however you can now see the structure of our partner certification program at http://www.memletics.com/partners/certification.asp

New - Teacher/Instructor functionality on learning-styles-online.com

This month we are adding some new functionality to our learning styles site - http://www.learning-styles-online.com. As a teacher, instructor, coach or training provider, you'll be able to define and manage "groups" of users on the site. This includes:

  • See who in the group has completed the test.
  • See individual learning style test results.
  • See the average and standard deviation of results for the entire group, or subsets.
  • Optionally - make the results available to the members of the group.

We're currently finishing testing on these so keep an eye out for these new updates, or subscribe to the Instructor FlashUpdate service below and we'll email you when they are available.

Free offline version: We've also added a new offline version of the learning styles test, in PDF format. This is a free publication that you can distribute to anyone you like, including classes and colleagues. Visit http://www.learning-styles-online.com/inventory/default.asp for more information.

New - Memletics Instructor FlashUpdate service for teachers and instructors

Are you a teacher, instructor, coach or other individual responsible for improving skills of others? If so, subscribe to our new Instructor FlashUpdate service. Its free, and we'll keep you up-to-date on new developments relevant to you across all our sites.

To subscribe, simply visit your newsletter manager page and subscribe to the service from there. Note - we will be automatically subscribing those who have indicated they are interested in using Memletics for teaching others, or have indicated they play this role in their registration.

New graphic identity for Memletics on its way

We've been working with a graphic design company to create new a new logo, book cover and website layout for Memletics. Here is a sneak preview of two logos we'll be asking you to vote on in the user survey:

Calling all designers: If you have a "graphic talent" and you have some ideas on a logo, layout or book cover, please feel free to submit them. We're willing to include one or two "user submissions" and we'll provide a small reward if your material is voted number 1! Please contact us via the website if you'd like to participate (closes 16th February).

Quick update our two new services launched in December

Over the past month we've added two major new services to our content-specific portals:

Accelerated learning news items

Many people take to setting goals as part of new year resolutions, so here are a few research article abstracts on goal setting from http://www.accelerated-learning-online.com/research:

You can read these abstracts at http://www.accelerated-learning-online.com/research, as well as find other related articles.

Testimonials for Learning-Styles-Online.com

Here is just some of the positive feedback we've received for our new learning style inventory at http://www.learning-styles-online.com:

  • Margaret, January 2004: I like how easy it is to use. I take my new students through the site at an early stage in their learning and they all comment on how helpful it is to analyze their own style and use the information to support their own learning.
  • Lesley, January 2004: I was only looking for a list of the seven learning styles but here I found much much more, thanks a lot!!
  • Janice, December 2003: "Thank you for such a wonderful site. I am trying to get my high school students to recognize their learning styles and your site has been the best site in this journey."
  • PJ, December 2003: "Very helpful to get a glimpse at areas of yourself that you don't normally think about."
  • Halley, December 2003: "I thought that this test was GREAT! It really unlocked my learning styles and helped me! Thank you."

Short takes - other news items

Here are a few "Short Take" news items:

  • We have been granted a registered trademark for the Memletics name, so now Memletics™ becomes Memletics®
  • Get rewarded for linking to us - new offer provides free copies of the Memletics Manual, and US$20 cash, for adding links to our websites from yours.
  • Newsletter Manager upgrade - with our large growth in user numbers, our old newsletter distribution process started causing spam warnings or blocks at major sites. It's now updated, and you can manage your subscriptions online. See links at the bottom of this page.

Caffeine - good for learning?

Do you find yourself reaching for coffee or tea to help you stay awake while studying or learning? Here's what the Memletics Manual has to say about caffeine:

Caffeine may be the most widely used psychoactive drug in western society. It improves alertness, reaction times and information processing. This indirectly helps you learn and remember new information. Caffeine is also helpful in creative tasks, such as writing and free association.

Caffeine is helpful in these activities as well as simple and repetitive tasks. However, caffeine can interfere as tasks get more complex. It can degrade our ability to pick out important information in a high workload environment, keep that information in working memory, and solve complex problems. As the load on working memory increases, the effect of caffeine changes from good to bad. You may want to keep this in mind if you are performing complex activities.

Like other drugs, it's essential to know when to use caffeine. Indeed, it appears that some of the negative side effects of caffeine only appear if you abuse it. Here are some points to keep in mind:

  • Use it after sleep. Use caffeine in the morning to speed the transition from sleep to full mental alertness. It's also useful after a lunchtime siesta. Some researchers believe the only "right" time to use caffeine is after sleep or rest.
  • Use it for creative activities. Such as writing, visualization and association activities.
  • Avoid it before bed. Caffeine has a half-life in the body of 6 hours. Use of caffeine before bedtime negatively influences sleep patterns. This may then mean you want more caffeine the next day!
  • Don't use it as a substitute for sleep. You should not use caffeine to battle circadian sleepiness. This is where people abuse caffeine the most, and also where most side effects appear. These side effects can include irritability, depression and overwhelming tiredness.
  • Minimal use during flying and other complex high-workload activities. Discuss with your flight surgeon or medical practitioner if you need to work at times that conflict with your circadian rhythm.

Safe dosages range between 200 to 400mg a day. Rough amounts of caffeine in typical drinks are: coffee - 100mg a cup, tea - 50mg a cup, cola soft drink - 40mg a can.

Coming features

Initiatives we're working on at present are the 2004 reader survey, finalizing arrangements for the first partner certifications, and adding new functionality to all sites. We also have some larger projects in the works that we hope to announce in the next few newsletters.

If you have any comments or suggestions for new features (we're always looking for new ideas to help you learn better), please reply via the contact details at http://www.memletics.com/about/contact.asp

Request for links, testimonials and comments - help us achieve the Memletics vision

If you believe Memletics is valuable, please consider how you can help more people learn about it. It's our vision to provide accelerated learning information to as many people as possible, and to use revenue from the Manual to fund further research (see our research projects at http://www.memletics.com/about/research.asp, for example).

A few ways you can help out include:

  • Tell others about Memletics. If you have found Memletics or its websites useful, please consider telling your friends and colleagues about it. Feel free to forward them a copy of this newsletter! If you haven't yet purchased the Memletics Manual, we'll give you a discount of up to 50% if you tell your friends and colleagues about the manual.
  • Link to us. If you have your own website, consider adding a link to us. All links help improve our search engine ranking, which means more people will find out about Memletics. We have some templates you can use, and we can also reward you for linking to us.
  • Join our affiliate program. We'll pay you a commission for each person you refer who ends up buying a book. See http://www.memletics.com/gd/affiliateprogram.asp
  • Write a testimonial. If you are already a reader of the Memletics Manual and you've found it useful for your learning, please consider writing a testimonial. Send it to us via email or post in the Members area on the site.
  • Provide comments or feedback. If you don't believe Memletics is as valuable as it could be, then please let us know about it. We welcome any and all feedback, positive or negative. This helps us update the system to be more useful for everyone.

Thanks very much - and future readers of Memletics will thank you also!
