Accelerated Learning: Secrets, myths, deceptions and half-truths
Unfortunately there are many systems and techniques out there that are
marketed to significantly improve learning and memory, whereas research has
shown little improvement. Some examples include:
- Music and Accelerated Learning. This theory started with Georgi
Lozanov more than twenty years ago, and as yet he has still not published
any follow-up research. "SuperLearning" and "The Mozart Effect" derive
from this theory. Be wary of any materials that suggests music can
significantly improve learning and memory!
- Learning while you sleep. One of the key parts of learning is
attention, and you have very little while you sleep!
- Subliminal learning. Again - attention is a key part of
learning. If you are not aware of the material, you'll find it very hard
to remember it.
- Light and sound devices, Hemisync, etc. Why spend hundreds of
dollars on equipment when simple relaxation techniques can achieve
similar, if not better results.
In addition, some systems are advertised as being the answer to faster
learning, where in reality they are only part of the story. Examples
include:
- Learning styles. Learning styles come from Howard Gardner's
theory of Multiple Intelligences, which is not a learning theory. Several
studies show that alone they do not significantly improve memory and
learning. They work better when used as part of an overall learning
system.
- Dietary supplements. Very few supplements improve cognitive
functioning without potential risks. For those that do, there's little
point unless you also train your mind to learn better.
- NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming. NLP sounds like a great
way to learn faster, however when you contrast it against Memletics you
will see it primarily helps mental state. Mental state is only one part of
accelerated learning - there are many others.
We're currently preparing a report titled
'Accelerated Learning: Secrets, myths, deceptions and half-truths.'
It's a summary of some of the popular approaches to accelerated learning
along with links to scientifically-based studies. These materials are a
welcome change to the marketing hype associated with many of these systems!
