If you lean visual, you reach for images, pictures, colours and maps to organise information and to explain things to other people. You can picture objects, plans and outcomes in your mind’s eye. You probably have a good spatial sense too, so you find your way around easily and rarely get lost. Walk out of a lift in an unfamiliar building and you just know which way to turn.

A whiteboard is a best friend (or would be, if you had one to hand). You draw, scribble and doodle, especially with colour. You tend to have a good eye for how things look—layout, balance, which colours sit well together (though not always!).

Some pursuits that lean heavily on the visual preference are visual art, architecture, photography, video and film, design, strategic planning, and navigation.

Keep one thing in mind as you read on. A preference is a leaning, not a verdict on what you’re capable of. It describes the way you most enjoy working with information, not a fixed wiring that locks the other approaches out. Nobody is purely visual, and your leanings can shift with the task in front of you.

Common phrases#

If the visual preference is strong in you, these may sound familiar:

  • Let’s look at it differently.
  • See how this works for you.
  • I can’t quite picture it.
  • I’d like to get a different perspective.
  • I never forget a face.

A myth worth retiring: “match the method to the style”#

Here’s the bit that surprises people. For years the advice was: find your style, then learn only in that style. If a quiz called you visual, you were told to stick to diagrams and skip the rest.

It’s an appealing idea. It’s also one of the most heavily tested claims in education—and it doesn’t hold up. When researchers actually run the experiment (teach people in a way that matches their supposed style versus a way that doesn’t, then test everyone the same way), the “matched” group does not learn more. Pashler and colleagues laid this out carefully in a major review and found the evidence for matching instruction to style essentially absent (Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer & Bjork, 2008).

So don’t read this page as “you’re visual, therefore use pictures and avoid words.” Read it as a description of how you like to work—useful for picking up the slack and playing to your strengths—not a fence around what will work for you.

Why good visuals help everyone#

Here’s the better news, and the practical heart of this page. The reason to use a good diagram isn’t that you scored visual on a quiz. It’s that your mind handles words and pictures through two partly separate channels, and a well-made picture gives you a second route into the same idea. Pair a clear explanation with a clear image and most people learn it more deeply than from the words alone—visual preference or not. That’s the multimedia principle, and it’s one of the most reliable findings in the whole field of instructional design (Mayer, 2021).

A couple of caveats keep it grounded:

  • The picture has to do work. A diagram that shows how something fits together earns its place. A pretty stock photo dropped in to decorate the page doesn’t—and can actually pull attention away from what matters.

  • Don’t double up the words. Reading the same sentence you’re also hearing narrated tends to hurt, not help. Words plus picture is the win; words plus the identical words is just clutter.

So whatever your leanings, here’s how to put visuals to work:

Use mind maps. Swap text for colour and pictures wherever you can. If you’re working on paper rather than a screen, keep at least four different coloured pens to hand.

Draw systems diagrams. These let you see how the parts of a system connect—the major parts of an engine, say, or the forces that keep a boat sailing in equilibrium. Replace words with pictures, and use colour to mark the major and minor links.

Try the visual journey or story technique for material that isn’t naturally “seeable.” Turning an abstract procedure into a little visual story is a good example.

Lean on peg words and events. Picturing the link between a peg and the thing you’re memorising is exactly the kind of vivid image that sticks. You’ll need to learn the first ten pegs first, but after that they come quickly.

“But I’m not very visual…”#

If you’re reading this thinking visualisation is only for the visual crowd—think again.

The word “visualisation” is a bit misleading. The visual sense is only one of the five senses you can use. Visualisation works just as well through the others. Lean aural? Tune into the sounds in the scene. Lean physical? Feel the movements, textures and sensations.

Here’s an example. You want to remember to set the throttle to idle as you land an aircraft. You can build that memory through any of the preferences:

  • Visual: See your hand pulling the throttle down to idle.

  • Aural: Hear the engine slow as you set the throttle to idle.

  • Verbal: Say “Cut throttle” as you set it to idle.

  • Physical: Feel the friction in the throttle, and feel it stop at the bottom.

  • Logical: Reason it through—“I want to land, therefore I set the throttle to idle.”

The social and solitary preferences are more about where you learn, but even here you can colour the scene in:

  • Social: Picture three other pilots in the cockpit, urging you to set it to idle.

  • Solitary: Picture yourself flying solo, setting the throttle to idle with no prompting from anyone.

The richest memories usually combine several of these at once—a picture and a sound and a feeling.

The takeaway#

If you lean visual, enjoy it and play to it. But don’t wall yourself off from words, sound or hands-on practice—and don’t expect a “visual-only” lesson to teach you more, because the matching idea doesn’t survive the evidence. The genuinely useful rule cuts the other way: a clear picture paired with a clear explanation helps almost anyone learn better. Reach for one whenever the material lets you.
